Das deutsche Universitäts- und Hochschulsystem hat seine Eigenarten, die sich z.T. nicht unerheblich z.B. vom angelsächsischen System unterscheiden. Zugleich gibt es vergleichsweise wenig Literatur darüber, die auch ausländische Akademiker und Post-Docs systematisch über das deutsche System informieren. Das ist sicherlich eine der Intentionen dieses englischsprachigen Buchs, das 2014 zunächst auf deutsch erschienen ist: Promotion – Postdoc – Professur: Karriereplanung in der Wissenschaft. Eine weitere Intention findet sich im Buchtitel: Der eigentlich schwierige Zugang zum Berufsleben im akademischen Universitätsbereich liegt nicht in der Promotion (PhD), sondern im Übergang vom (oft zeitlich befristeten, nicht selten prekären) Post-Doc zur (zeitlich unbefristeten und gut besoldeten) "ordentlichen" Universitätsprofessur. Auch hier will dieses Buch coachen und erfolgreiche Tips vermitteln. Und schließlich: "Academic careers in Germany have their own logic, full of unwritten rules. As a career coach for postdocs at a German University of Excellence, I noticed how much it matters to know how decisions are made, which achievements truly count, and when to take the next step."
