Reinhart Koselleck (1923-2006) gehörte zweifelsohne zu den führenden Vertretern der Geschichtstheorie in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Bekanntheit erlangte der ab 1973 an der Universität Bielefeld wirkende Professor für Theorie der Geschichte durch seine Bücher „Kritik und Krise“(1973, 16. Aufl. 2023), „Vergangene Zukunft“(1979), „Zeitgeschichten“(2003), „Begriffsgeschichten“(2006), „Vom Sinn und Unsinn der Geschichte“(2010) und durch das von ihm mitherausgegebene neunbändige Lexikon „Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe“(1972-1997). In seinen Schriften zeigt Koselleck die Notwendigkeit und Produktivität einer Historik nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf. Dabei hat er sich auch eingeschaltet in politische Debatten um die Denkmalkultur, zum Beispiel um die „Neue Wache“ und um das Holocaustmahnmal in Berlin.
Anlässlich seines 100. Geburtstages erschienen nicht nur im Hausverlag Kosellecks, dem Suhrkamp Verlag, aufschlussreiche Bände, sondern ihm wurde auch ein eigener Band des interdisziplinären Organs „Archiv für Begriffsgeschichte“(AfB) gewidmet. Herausgegeben wird der Forschungsband zu Reinhart Koselleck von Carsten Dutt (*1966), dem Präsidenten der Hans-Georg-Gadamer-Gesellschaft für hermeneutische Philosophie. Heft 64/2 enthält aufschlussreiche Aufsätze zum Schwerpunkt-Thema, u.a. werden Kosellecks frühe literaturkritischen Arbeiten und seine Begriffsneologismen beleuchtet. Unter der Rubrik „Aus dem Archiv“ finden sich in dieser Ausgabe der AfB zwei Texte. Erstmals wird die für Kosellecks Werksgenese aufschlussreiche Doppelrezension zu Hans Freyers „Weltgeschichte Europas“ und Karl Jaspers „Vom Ursprung und Ziel der Geschichte“ aus dem Jahre 1950 ungekürzt abgedruckt. Des Weiteren ist in dem Heft aus den Gesprächen, die Carsten Dutt von 2003 bis 2005 mit dem Historiker geführt hat, erstmals das Interview „Zum politischen Totenkult“ veröffentlicht. Von den weiteren Abhandlungen verdient der Aufsatz Rüdiger Zills zu den frühen technikethischen Arbeiten Hans Blumenbergs besondere Erwähnung. Abgerundet wird der AfB-Band durch zwei sehr gute Buchbesprechungen zu lesenswerten Werken: einer Einführung in die Begriffsgeschichte und einer den Post-Colonial Studies zuzurechnenden politikwissenschaftlichen Habilitationsschrift. Lehrkräfte der Fächer Philosophie, Ethik und Geschichte erhalten durch das vorliegende Buch sehr gutes Fachwissen zu Reinhart Kosellecks` Œuvre, sowie das eigene Denken inspirierende Aufsätze.
Fazit: Das AfB-Heft zu Reinhart Koselleck ist eine lohnenswerte Lektüre für alle, die sich intensiv mit dem Werk des Geschichtstheoretikers auseinandersetzen möchten.

A tour through Reinhart Koselleck’s extensive library shows his intimacy with Greek and Latin texts, almost reminiscent of the Humanist postulate ad fontes. Furthermore, the paramount importance of Greek historiography is obvious in Koselleck’s efforts to formulate a theory of history and gauge the possibilities and limits of historical knowledge. He saw Thucydides in particular as the archegetes of modern historiography. His reference to the historiographical and philosophical tradition of Greco-Roman antiquity allowed him to analyze and bring to consciousness »the peculiarity of modern times as a new time and the history of time as time«. Talking about Reinhart Koselleck and ancient history always means talking about Christian Meier. In no other field did the two historians work more closely together than in the field of conceptual history. Through his work, Meier consistently historicized antiquity, which he perceived as rather alien, but whose significance for the present he underscored from the perspective of reception. Koselleck, on the other hand, who described temporalization (»Verzeichtlichung«) as the decisive criterion of modernity, detemporalized antiquity in order to advance to the supra-temporal proprium of ancient historiography and philosophy, which is an essential component of his own theory of history.
Dunkhase, Jan Eike: Zwischen Kafka und Hamlet. Reinhart Kosellecks publizistische Anfänge im Kontext
The paper introduces Reinhart Koselleck’s first three publications from the years 1951–53, which present the future historian as a literary critic. They report on a Kafka workshop organized by students at the University of Heidelberg and review a contemporary novel by Paul Schallück as well as a Hamlet interpretation promoted by Carl Schmitt. Koselleck’s articles are analyzed within the context of the student magazine they were published in and contrasted with his fellow student Hans Robert Jauss’ first publication in the same Forum academicum. While young Koselleck doesn’t express himself as an historian in these early publications, they shed light on his intellectual beginnings in the shadow of his emerging doctoral thesis Critique and Crisis, especially concerning his foundational struggle with »the transcendence of history.«
Kemmerer, Alexandra: Ad limina. Koselleck und die völkerrechtliche Imagination in der Krise
Early in his academic career, Reinhart Koselleck developed an interest in questions of international law. However, the historiography of international law, which has undergone a very dynamic evolution for almost three decades, remains little interested in Koselleck’s conceptualhistorical method. In this paper, I trace Koselleck’s association with international law scholars – particularly with Carl Schmitt, with whom he maintained an exchange beginning with the latter’s Nomos der Erde (1950) and continuing through Die legale Weltrevolution (1978). I strive to uncover the mutual influences and the significance of this cooperation for today’s transdisciplinary legal research.Their perspectives and possibilities through the conceptual-historical method are discussed in closing, before I return to the end of the world, where land and sea meet and where this text began.

Hölscher, Lucian: The Discovery of the Future in Early Modern Europe.
My argument for the discovery of the future is based on the idea of a process of temporalization that took place in early modern Europe. The following essay elaborates this idea by discussing the change of the linguistic inventory of the English and German languages at that time and sets up the thesis that speaking of a future has become possible only when a linguistic conceptof the future existed, which happened to be not before the 17th century.
Vahland, Joachim: »Empirischer Realismus«. Zu Kants Begriff der Erfahrung
In current research, there is an increasing tendency to subject the Critique of Pure Reason to a realist reading and to understand Kant's concept of experience in the tradition of British Empiricism. In contrast, against the background of the paradigm of imagination advanced by Descartes and Locke in the 18th century, the present study tries to demonstrate in a historical as well as systematic perspective that Kant’s theoretical decisions solely concern »appearances«, which as constitutional achievements of subjective productivity cannot be reconciled with a realist interpretation – just as little as Kant’s discursive concept of truth in his theory of judgement, with which apriorism becomes dependent on social acts of recognition.
Zill, Rüdiger: Eine Philosophie der Freiheit. Hans Blumenbergs frühe Versuche, Technik und Ethik zu verbinden
The oeuvre of Hans Blumenberg, while wide-ranging, devotes scant attention to the subject of ethics. An exception comes in the form of several shorter pieces written in the early 1950s as part of an unfinished work on the intellectual history of technology. The essays emerged during the nihilism debate, in which not only Martin Heidegger and Ernst Jünger but also many less wellknown philosophers such as Walter Bröcker and Ludwig Landgrebe drew on the concept of nihilism in an attempt to explain the civilizational rupture of National Socialism. In the essays, which remain mostly unpublished, Blumenberg sketches a philosophy of freedom that borrows heavily from Kant and stands opposed to the existentialism of Sartre popular at the time. Some of his explorations of ethical questions are in part based on everyday problems and as such address the general public as well as philosophical audiences.
