Gibt es neben dem Kunstschönen, dem Naturschönen, dem Technikschönen, dem Mathematikschönen, dem Performanz-Schönen noch eine weitere Art des Schönen? Ja, nämlich das „Natur-Technik-Schöne“, das die Ausbeutung und Umgestaltung der Natur und deren Landschaften durch technische Eingriffe des Menschen dokumentiert, mit anderen Worten das Zeitalter des Anthropozän. Dieses ist die Thematik des kanadischen Fotokünstlers Edward Burtynsky (*1955). Zu seinen bekanntesten Foto-Serien zählen u.a.: „Mines“(1983-2023), „Tailings“(1995-1996), „Urban Miles“(1997), „Shipbreaking“(2000-2001), „China“(2004-2005), „Oil“(2006-2013), „Water“(2009-2013), „Anthroposcene“(2012-2018) und „Rare Earth“(2023). Das multidisziplinäre „The Anthroposcene Project“ wurde zudem verfilmt unter dem Titel „Anthroposcene: The Human Epoch“(2018). Burtynskys fotografische Werke erscheinen im Göttinger Verlag Steidl.
Einen hervorragenden Überblick über sein künstlerisches Schaffen gibt der 2024 bei Steidl publizierte englischsprachige Fotoband Burtynskys „Extraction/Abstraction“, der 2025 bereits die zweite Auflage erreichte. In diesem sind auch zwei einleitende Beiträge zu dem Künstler abgedruckt sowie von Burtynsky der Text „On Hope“, in dem er die kritische Rolle der Ästhetik verdeutlicht. Der Bildtextband enthält eine gekonnte Auswahl von 130 Farbbildplatten aus seinem Œuvre von 1999 bis 2023. Die Fotografien wurden zum Teil aus großer Höhe mithilfe eines Helikopters erstellt. Erwähnenswert ist die exzellente Bildqualität des Bandes.
Das vorliegende Bildmaterial kann als anschaulicher Beleg für die Notwendigkeit einer ökologischen Ethik angesehen werden. Anschaulich wird von dem Künstler verdeutlicht, wie der Mensch Natur nach seinem Gutdünken durch massive technische Eingriffe verändert und dabei natur-technikschöne Landschaften entstehen. Lehrkräfte der Fächer Ethik, Geographie und Bildende Kunst werden durch den vorliegen Band motiviert, sich in ihrem Fachunterricht oder in einem fächerübergreifenden Projekt mit Fragen der Umweltethik anhand von Burtynskys Fotografien auseinanderzusetzen.
Fazit: Burtynskys fotografischer Band „Extraction/Abstraction“ verdient einen Platz in jeder modernen Bibliothek der Landschaftsfotografie – aufgrund der eindrücklichen Dokumentation der Umgestaltung der Natur durch den Menschen im Zeitalter des Anthropozän.

Published on the occasion of Edward Burtynsky’s largest and most comprehensive exhibition to date, at the Saatchi Gallery, London, Extraction / Abstraction looks deeply at the key subjects and signature images spanning his 45-year career. Alongside Burtynsky’s compelling photographs, the book includes texts by celebrated art historian Simon Schama, who examines Burtynsky’s work in light of the question “Can art help save the world?”, and by curator Marc Mayer, former director of the National Gallery of Canada, who provides an overview of the photographer’s achievements as technician, journalist and artist.
Extraction / Abstraction presents a dichotomy of Burtynsky’s image-making imperative: the lucid and informed documentation of large-scale extractive processes, and how he transforms the landscapes of industry into complete abstractions. Other essential themes in his oeuvre such as agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure and waste also find their rightful place here. With more than 130 color plates, the book furthermore has a special section, the “Process Archive,” featuring previously unpublished, behind-the-scenes photographs of Burtynsky at work on the ground and in the air throughout his career. The archive provides a glimpse into the artist’s progression through the evolution of the medium itself, from mid twentieth-century large-format analogue (film-based) cameras, through to twenty-first-century high-resolution digital technologies, including explorations into photogrammetry and augmented reality.
